- Richard has practiced law in New Zealand for 29 years and remains a consultant and Notary in the law firm of Kaimai Law, which has offices in Tauranga and Katikati.
- Richard has been a Cost Reviser (now Cost Assessor) for the Waikato Bay of Plenty District Law Society since the abolition by the NZLS of its Scale of (ad valorem) Charges in 1983. Over the intervening 25 years, he has chaired the District Law Society's Conveyancing Costs Committee for a total of six years, and has personally undertaken or peer reviewed in excess of 250 Cost Revisions.
- In 2003 he established Kaimai Consulting Limited (since rebranded as Validatum™ Limited, Pricing for Professionals), under the umbrella of which he provides costing consulting services to the legal profession. He has directly consulted to over 80 law firms and individual practitioners throughout New Zealand, ranging in size from sole practitioner to 28 partners. Firms Richard has worked intensively with include in their numbers, three past NZLS Presidents.
- Richard's consultancies have taken a variety of forms, including full day intensive workshops for partners and staff, mentoring individual partners with costing issues, the provision of costing precedents and templates, representation at Cost Revisions and Appeals, expert testimony in the High Court, and costing opinions.
- Richard has on numerous occasions been engaged by the NZLS, Lexis Nexis, Thompson Brookers and NZ Law Limited, to present workshops, seminars, and keynote addresses at conferences including the NZLS' biennial Property Law Conferences in 2002 and 2004. In November 2005, the NZLS' Continuing Legal Education Committee contracted Richard to provide a series of workshops around the country on costing of legal services.See Participants Feedback and Staff Comments
- Richard has had numerous articles on costing of legal services published in Law Talk, Law News, New Zealand Lawyer, Management Magazine, Business Herald and National Business Review.
- In August 2008 Richard was engaged by the NZLS to write part of the section on costing which appears in Standards Committee publications associated with the Client Care regime under the Lawyers & Conveyancers Act 2006.
- Validatum™ Limited is a member of the US-based Professional Pricing Society.
